Before the BirthHelen offers an independent, personal service to mothers and their babies to help Breastfeeding begin in comfort and with confidence. She encourages the presence of husbands/partners and others who may be planning to support mum after the birth, such as a grandparent/sister or friend if mum wishes. Helen values mothers making their own decisions and that Breastfeeding takes place in her family context - she will help you towards your wishes with feeding. Some mums-to-be may wish to have an appointment before the baby is born; this is particularly helpful for first-time mums who have a maze of information to decipher. Helen aims to simplify this and provide easy-to-understand information, as well as practical support and guidance, so increasing mums confidence. It is best to arrange an appointment 8 weeks before the expected birth, but anytime is fine. Mums expecting a baby through adoption or surrogacy are encouraged to make contact as early in pregnancy as possible, (support and information can be provided by phone/e-mail for women out of area). For 2nd time mums (or more) often there are worries how Breastfeeding will fit in with the life of a toddler/pre-school brother or sister or work issues. Talking through current concerns and past experiences of Breastfeeding, especially when Breastfeeding didn't meet their expectations, enables mums to be confident this time about their own instincts and abilities. This appointment includes how Breastfeeding works, what normal breastfeeding patterns are, including waking at night, how to recognise early baby feeding cues and how to prevent problems. |
After your baby arrivesAfter the birth of your baby Consultations are very useful for encouragement and to be reassured that Breastfeeding is going well.Mums often approach Helen as they do have difficulties with Breastfeeding which need extra support and help to improve. The issues are often said to be: 'not enough milk'.......'sleepy baby' 'feeding hurts' - pain in nipple/breast during or after a feed 'mum feeling exhausted or overwhelmed' 'baby not putting on enough weight' 'sore or damaged nipples'........ 'mastitis'.........'thrush' 'attachment problems' or 'breast refusal' - (baby is not feeding) 'Breastfeeding very often and/or for long periods of time' 'Breastfeeding after breast reduction or enlargement' 'relactation' - restarting or increasing breastfeeding after stopping or reducing number of breastfeeds 'induced lactation' - Breastfeeding after adoption/surrogacy 'expressing breastmilk' - how much, how often, how to safely store? 'Breastfeeding in public places' - out and about with your baby 'weaning the breastfed baby' - introducing family/solid foods 'returning to work' - how to carry on or partially Breastfeed whilst working The Consultation includes taking a health and Breastfeeding history, watching a complete feeding session, guiding and advising, providing written information when needed. All mums are given their own personal feeding plan. This usually takes place in your home; by arrangement, consultations can also be in hospital, by e-mail or phone. Home Consultations include a follow up phone call or e-mail to talk about progress. Small groups of mums may wish to book a group session with a particular theme in mind. |
